Bosch
awards - 2001
Bosch Power Tools, a division of Robert Bosch GmbH,
is proud to announce its sponsorship of the art and design competition
WORK ART for the fifth time. The awards are intended to not only offer
financial encouragement to young, aspiring artists and designers, but,
more importantly, to provide them with a platform for presenting their
ideas and works to an interested public.
Theme
The contest is split into the two categories of art and design, with separate
judges and prizes for each. The theme for both categories is Kraft!Quelle!
- the power source of creativity! Participants have the freedom to develop
their ideas as objects, paintings or drawings - there are no restrictions
as to what kind of materials an entrant may use. Selection criteria will
be based on originality and imagination in implementing the contest theme.
Entry conditions
All students enrolled at a university, college or academy in the subjects
of art or design are allowed to enter. Certification of enrolment for
the current semester is required as proof.
Additionally, all young artists and designers who graduated from a recognised
institution not more than five years ago are invited to enter. A copy
of the relevant diploma or degree is required as proof.
Entering
Participants must send in the following documents in order to be registered:
- Photo or sketch of proposed idea, plus brief description
written in either English or German
- Certification of enrolment for the current semester
or a copy of diploma
- Fully-completed entry form (attached)
The cut-off date for entries is March 12, 2001. This
will be determined by the postmark. Please send your completed entry documents

Order of events
In the first phase, applicants send in a photo or sketch
of their planned work, in addition to a short description of it in either
English or German (not more than one A4 page). Applicants must also nominate
which category - art or design - they wish to enter.
In the second phase, the two judging panels will pre-select
20 submissions for art and 20 for design without knowing the names of
the creators. These short-listed candidates will then be asked to execute
their submitted ideas. The works must be completed and ready for collection
by mid-August, 2001. Candidates should specify a pick-up date before mid-April,
2001.
Photos, sketches and descriptions not selected for
the second phase will only be returned when there is a stamped, self-addressed
envelope enclosed.
If nominated for the second phase, entrants have an
obligation to realise their submitted ideas by the required date. Participants
enter into this obligation upon registering for phase one of the competition.
Second-phase candidates will receive from Bosch a
subsidy of DM 500 for the costs of materials. This subsidy will be provided
by Bosch Power Tools.
In the third phase, the jury panels will judge the
submitted works and determine the prize-winners for each category. The
awards ceremony and subsequent exhibition, at Stuttgart airport, will
take place most probably in autumn, 2001.
Dimensions
Due to reasons of handling and transport, limits must
be placed on size and weight: the realised work should not exceed more
than 1.80 cubic metres nor weigh more than 200kg.

Prize money
In total there is DM 40,000 in prize money to be awarded.
1st Prize: a one-year stipend for each category
worth DM 1000 per month
2nd Prize: DM 5000 for each category
3rd Prize: DM 3000 for each category
Purchase
The prize money does not cover the purchase of exhibited works. Robert
Bosch GmbH retains the option to purchase any presented works up to four
weeks after the exhibition opening. The company also reserves the right
to purchase an exhibited work on the basis of individual negotiations
with the concerned artist or designer.
Awards Ceremony / Exhibition / Documentation
The announcement of the prizewinners will be followed by an awards ceremony
and exhibition, scheduled for autumn, 2001. The prizewinners will be invited
to the awards and the exhibition opening as guests of Robert Bosch GmbH
and Bosch Power Tools. The prize-winning works plus other selected works
will be documented in an exhibition catalogue. Other exhibitions are a
possibility.
It is taken for granted that candidates agree to their
works being put at the disposal of the exhibition and awards ceremony.
Participants also agree to photos of their works and
themselves appearing in publications of Robert Bosch GmbH and other publicity
activities connected with WORK ART. Furthermore, participants consent
to photos of their works and themselves appearing in the parallel competition
WORK ART on the WEB and related publications.
Transport / Insurance
Bosch will cover the costs of picking up and returning the realised works.
It is the responsibility of the participant, however, to arrange a time
and place for collection with the WORK ART editorial team. The original,
once completed, should be made ready for transportation as soon as possible.
Participants are requested to adequately package their works for safe
transportation. This precaution is in their own interests. Robert Bosch
GmbH accepts no liability for damage incurred during transportation.
During the period of the exhibition, works on display
will be insured to a maximum value of DM 10,000. Robert Bosch GmbH will
assume the costs of this insurance. Participants do not have the right
to lodge damage claims not covered by this insurance.
Obligations
By registering for the contest, candidates enter into an obligation to
execute their submitted ideas by the stipulated date, and to realise these
works according to the designs and descriptions they submitted to the
judges in phase one.
Furthermore, participants must give an assurance that
their submissions are original works of art and design which they hold
all rights to. False information may result in expulsion from the competition
or dispossession of prize money. Legal appeal is not possible.
